Dry and cracked, the reason for the old river being like this is a simple one. Erosion. As time warped the land and valleys, it carved away at the surface of the Earth. Cutting off the flow of water to the river (which formed Blue Stone Lake) a dried riverbed was left behind in it's wake. However..
